Last year the RAS’ Committee for Diversity in Astronomy and Geophysics (CDAG) anonymously surveyed ~660 members of the global A&G community on their experiences of bullying and harassment in their careers, within both academia and industry.
Survey respondents were asked if they had experienced bullying and harassment in the workplace, and the frequency of such experiences. They were also asked if they had witnessed such behaviour in the workplace, how well they felt their workplace prevented bullying and harassment, and whether or not they would recommend their workplace and career choices to others. Questions to determine respondent demographics, such as ethnicity, gender, and age, were asked, as well as questions regarding the career stage and job or study type of the respondent, in the hope of presenting an intersectional perspective.
This dataset has allowed the RAS to disaggregate the anonymous responses to identify any demographic groups that are more likely to suffer bullying and harassment. Initial data analysis indicates that bullying and harassment is prevalent in both Astronomy and Geophysics, and people from many under-represented groups are more likely to be both victims and witnesses of bullying and harassment.
The results of this survey will be presented to the public in a report published by the RAS during the week of NAM, with a summary of the key findings and recommendations given during the Diversity session.
All attendees are expected to show respect and courtesy to other attendees and staff, and to adhere to the NAM Code of Conduct.
