The UK lacks the modelling capability of the chromosphere to fully exploit data from new facilities such as DKIST, SKA, and Solar Orbiter. While some progress is possible by collaborating with international groups who have devoted some efforts over the years to develop models, a real step-change in the UK's capabilities can be achieved by the development of the Solar Atmospheric Modelling Suite (SAMS), a set of documented, publicly available codes. SAMS aims to improve the atomic physics and radiation transport of existing codes, optimise the core MHD solver for chromospheric dynamics and build software based around UK community needs. SAMS requires a collaborative effort across UK modelling groups and would aim to train all UK solar researchers in both the use of the codes and the theory behind it to provide a skills uplift to the whole community.
We briefly describe the need for improved models, and possible paths to achieve
that.
